Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s new inpatient bed tower exemplifies cutting-edge healthcare design by integrating hospital expansion with operational efficiency. The project seamlessly connects the new inpatient building with the adjacent Rosenberg Building via bridge-like corridors, enhancing public circulation and unifying the West Campus. A thoughtful palette of materials and design elements also links the West and East Campuses, creating a cohesive environment that supports both patients and staff.

Fire Trol’s Contribution:

Fire Trol’s prefabricated fireproof columns were instrumental in overcoming the structural complexities of this project. With fewer than half of the building’s columns bearing directly on the ground and significant overhangs above the existing Emergency Department, the design demanded precise and innovative structural solutions. Fire Trol’s columns provided the necessary fire safety and support to meet these challenges while complementing the architectural vision of the bed

Project Highlights:

  • Urban Site Challenges:
Situated in a dense urban area, the project had to address the structural demands of its location and topography. The inclusion of loading and ambulance docks beneath the building, coupled with the unique overhangs, required meticulous design coordination. Fire Trol’s prefabricated columns offered a reliable and efficient solution to these challenges.
  • Embedded Nature:
A 75-foot-high roof garden creates a calming and restorative environment for patients, families, and staff, linking the hospital with Boston’s renowned Emerald Necklace of parks and greenways. The garden features walking paths, seating areas, and diverse landscaping, fostering wellness and offering respite within the urban landscape.
  • Sustainability:
With a 32% reduction in energy use compared to the 2030 baseline and a Project EUI of 156 kBtu/SF, the new tower underscores Beth Israel’s commitment to sustainability. Features such as enhanced building envelopes, energy-efficient systems, and a focus on green infrastructure highlight the center’s leadership in environmental design.

Awards:

  • 2024 IIDE NE Award

Fire Trol is proud to have played a key role in this landmark healthcare project, providing structural fireproofing solutions that ensure safety and longevity. We look forward to seeing the new inpatient bed tower serve as a beacon of innovation and care for the Boston community for years to come.
